Hi Rigval. I stumbled upon your blog whilst looking for tips on doing a shoe patina. I have to say your blog have been an entertaining read.

I think we both share the passion of automobiles, watches (and vintage ones), shoes and clothing in general and also your frustration when looking at men here in Asia. Coming from Brunei, most men here are the same, with no clue on footwear. I for one had the same problem, but after buying 3 pairs of Bata over one year I gave on substandard footwear and started reading SF, AAAC and Justin FItzpatrick's blog. Btw, I love how you add colour subtly with your socks and laces.

How are your custom made wholecuts holding up? I have to say the price is pretty steep for nailed-on soles though. Would expect that price range to be handwelted. I have read about good cordwainers from Indonesia. There's abrand called Santalum from Indonesia that makes hand-lasted and handwelted shoes for circa USD$50. They have a vid on youtube. Although the last shapes are uninspiring, it gives me hope of possibly finding a proper shoe cobbler here in ASEAN.

Anyway, keep up the good work and hope to read more posts.

Regards,
Munir Metassan

Hello,

Thanks for visiting my blog. My wholecuts are doing fine. It still needs some running in as the sole it thick and not as flexible as the Italian shoes I love wearing.

The Santalum shoes are neat, but they are not, bespoke in my opinion. The custom made wholecuts I have were made to measure. The shoemaker measured my feet before making the shoe. Customizing is just one part of a quality shoe. Having it made to fit your feet exactly is what makes my wholecuts a tad bit special.

If you like Indonesian shoes, I believe the best in the business is Fortuna shoes - http://www.cv-fortuna.com/content.htm . These are fantastic. If I have the time I may plan a trip to bandung for a factory visit. They may not do bespoke, but their wholecuts are beautiful. I have a pair of grey suede longwing from indonesia and they are pretty good. They must have come from the same factory as these as they are the same shoes http://junkardcompany.com/shop/agreable-grey .

Keep coming back. I may not post too often as I am involved with a whole lot of things these days. But when I do, I intend to make them unique.

Regards

my other half recommended your blog and i find it interesting. we share almost the same passions. one can never have too many shoes. i have lost count of tye number of shoes I have having filled 2 large cabinets taller than myself. once you have them on rotation, they hardly ever wear out so long as you store them properly.

Hello,

Thank your other half for me. Yup. Which is why I dont really care what construction the shoe is made of these days. They all last years.
