Malaysian Men's Style Faux Pas #3 - Still wearing the designer's label or tag on a suit jacket sleeve

This series of articles is to assist a whole lot of you out there. I am slowly coming out with stuff which you SHOULD NOT be doing as it is not how you should do things. Now notice that when you buy yourselves an off the rack new suit, sports jacket or a blazer you would notice that it comes with a lot of things that you should need to remove before you wear it.

In new items, the pockets are sewn shut, the vents are also sewn (if the jacket is vented at the rear), some lapel buttonholes are also sewn and there is that thing called a label on the jacket's left sleeve. This is for shipping purposes, as well as to keep the coat hanging flat while at the store. The label on the sleeve is to make it easy to see which company made the jacket so that it is easy for the storekeeper to sort things out.

Now this is the issue here. Most would open up the pockets, remove the stitched up vents and lapels but somehow they end up leaving the darned sleeve label on the jacket and wear them to functions thinking it is alright in doing so.

The thing is that in Malaysia people seldom wear jackets. But I have actually seen a local TV drama on RTM (Radio TV Malaysia) where the suits are definitely sponsored and the actors were ALL WEARING THE LABEL ON THE SLEEVE. Then I noticed a photograph of a visiting high ranking government official from an African nation who was visiting some high ranking people in a Malaysian enforcement agency who must have bought the suit prior to visiting Malaysia as he kept his Super 120s wool tag on his new suit.

Today I actually saw someone like this at a product launch. He wore a sports jacket with the label on the sleeve. I have cropped out what needed to be edited so that no one would feel embarrassed. Especially the chap in the sports jacket and the big 'H' buckle - which is another issue as everyone seems to have one of these belts (you cannot tell anymore whether it is real or otherwise these days. I think this is another faux pas Malaysian men should avoid.).

The sleeve label should have been removed obviously but he made a speech, launched a product, had pictures of him taken with the label intact. You do not display the brand of your jacket. Ever. As stated, it is for the stores for ease of packing or storing. Even if the jacket says Huge Boss or Almari. It is supposed to be removed. Whilst you can be a dandy, having a label is free advertisement for the brand. The only letters or logo on a gentlemen should be his own. But then again, since you already know your name, you shouldn't have that too.
